Oral Oddities: Four of the Strangest Dental Emergencies Ever

A dental patient consulting their dentist

Sometimes, a dental emergency can make you feel awkward or embarrassed. It may even strike you as too weird or shameful to show to your local dentist. With all that said, you’d be surprised at how many people worldwide suffer from odd yet urgent oral issues. There’s no need to see yourself as an outlier who can’t or shouldn’t get treatment. If you need proof of that fact, just look at four of the strangest dental emergencies listed below.

Say No to Super Glue

Super glue can certainly help with many repair and craft projects. However, one patient learned the hard way that it can’t fix your dental issues.

The story starts with a woman whose dental crown had fallen out. In an effort to reattach the cap, she tried applying super glue to it and her tooth. This action not only failed to secure her crown but also covered her mouth and throat with glue. She was left with a situation far worse than her original crown problem.

A Literal “Jaw Breaker”

Not every dental emergency occurs before a dental visit. As a certain patient once learned, these dilemmas can also happen while seeing your dentist.

This patient’s emergency came during a routine tooth extraction. While the dentist was trying to remove the tooth, they accidentally broke the person’s jaw! The patient didn’t feel any pain from that incident, but it did force them to wire their jaw shut for two months.

Most Dentures are Removable

Do you know how most dentures are removable? Well, one elderly woman had an emergency when she forgot that fact.

You see, this patient was seeing her dentist for a denture repair. The dental team only needed a brief oral exam to see the problem. Because the woman had left her dentures in her mouth for months, she suffered from horrible breath, infected gums, and broken prosthetics. She ended up needing more than just normal denture repairs.

The Growing Mouth Garden

Eating veggies is usually good for oral health, as the habit can strengthen teeth and gums. Still, one patient experienced an urgent exception to this rule.

The patient’s emergency – a toothache – seemed normal enough at first. Even so, a more thorough look revealed a very surprising cause for their oral aches and pains. It turned out that tomato seeds had lodged deep in the patient’s gums and sprouted small plants! As the seeds grew, they pressed down on sensitive tissues and triggered a toothache.

You wouldn’t be the first to experience the strangest dental emergencies ever. Given that fact, don’t hesitate – see your dentist for treatment!
