Are Broken Dentures a Dental Emergency?

A denture that is broken in half.

For some people it can be hard to ask for help. Whether they’re shy, embarrassed, or simply don’t want to impose, they would rather suffer in silence than speak up in their time of need. Unfortunately, this can make their problems go from bad to worse, or at very least prolong their discomfort longer than they should.

When it comes to dentures, you may be under the impression that because they are “false teeth” that they aren’t as important as real teeth, and thus a denture-related emergency isn’t as important as one that involves natural teeth, but that’s simply not true. Here’s why if you wear dentures you shouldn’t hesitate to ask your dentist for urgent help if they become damaged.

The Importance of Dentures

Dentures are prosthetic devices that are used to replace missing teeth. They can come in full or partial sets, depending on how many teeth you need to replace. Your dentures are an important device because they allow you to speak and chew properly. Without your dentures, you can struggle to eat a healthy diet, and run the risk of malnutrition.

Why Do Dentures Break?

Dentures can break for many reasons. The teeth or “crowns” can crack or fall out if dropped, or if you bite into something you shouldn’t, such as packaging or your fingernails. Another way dentures can get damaged is if they dry out because they weren’t soaked overnight. They can even become warped with time, causing them to stop fitting you properly.

Can My Dentures Be Fixed?

While whether your dentures can be repaired depends on the type and severity of the damage, there are certain issues that can sometimes be fixed and others that cannot. If your dentures have a broken crown, this can usually be replaced, and an improper fit can sometimes be corrected with a process called relining. But for dentures that are cracked or warped, it is often best to just replace them as these problems are generally not fixable.

Thus, if you notice any damage to your dentures, it is imperative that you visit your dentist as soon as possible before problems worsen. They will be able to determine whether your dentures can be fixed or if it’s time to replace them.

How Do I Prevent Denture Damage?

While not every accident is preventable, reducing your risk of accidental damage is easy. Here are a few steps you can take to help keep them safe for as long as possible:

  • Line your sink with a towel and fill it with water before you remove your dentures for cleaning. This way if you drop them, they will have some cushion to land on.
  • Brush your dentures twice a day, and floss them once a day just as you would your natural teeth.
  • Remove your dentures each night before bed and soak them in water or denture soak until it is time to wear them again.
  • Get regular denture checkups from your dentist.
  • Do not use your dentures to chew anything other than food.
  • If your dentures stop fitting properly, see a dentist as soon as possible.

Remember, you’re not imposing on anyone by visiting your dentist for an emergency appointment for your denture emergency. Your dentures are designed to help you eat and speak. Losing those abilities can cause a host of problems, making denture damage an urgent matter that certainly constitutes emergency care.
